Top Tips for Hiking the Appalachian Trail


The Appalachian Trail is a famous hiking trail due to its wonderful views, nearly endless seeming skies, and for allowing people to get in tune with nature. People wishing to hike this trail for the first time should take into consideration it takes time and a good amount of hard work to reach the end. We know many people are eager to explore what this hiking trail has to offer, so here are a few tips for first time hikers on the Appalachian Trail.

Take Your Time

One of the biggest aspects of hiking is that it expends a lot of energy, and they’re often miles long. People eager to get to the end of the trail will usually try to cover several miles in one day to reach the end. Take your time when hiking the trail, it’s not a race. People who try to rush through it can often suffer injuries like blisters, twisted knees, and even rolled ankles. These injuries can prevent people from hiking for a while.

When you’re in doubt, just pace yourself properly when hiking the length of the trail. When you feel tired, give yourself time to rest instead of just going straight ahead. You’ll be glad you took your time too. Why not enjoy the scenery once in a while anyway?

Give Yourself Time to Rest

There will be days during your hike where you will feel absolutely dog tired or your feet ache. These are the times when you need to stop to give yourself a full day of rest. This means not making progress on the trail for that day while you have a hot meal and a good night’s rest. While this can seem counter intuitive, it’s actually a very good idea. Give yourself a day to rest while hiking the trail, especially when you’re heading back the other way.

Carry Several Pairs of Sock

Remember, you’re going to be on your feet for the entire duration of the hike. Foot gear is very important when taking on such a challenge, and socks is one of the most important items you’re going to be bringing with you. There will be days in between where you won’t be able to do laundry. Change out each pair of socks for the day that you wear them before putting on another pair. The right kind of socks will help to prevent your feet from forming blisters, and there may be days where you have to hike out in the rain. Being able to have that dry pair of socks can save you a lot of pain and frustration down the line.
