Three Beginner Skiing Tips

Skiing is a fantastic sport and leisure activity, and you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t try it out at least once in your life. With that being said, skiing for the first time can be daunting, and if you don’t have the right training, it can also be dangerous. If you want to have fun on the ski field, while also staying safe, you will need some excellent beginner tips to get you started.

These tips aren’t intended to replace professional instruction, but instead will give you some ideas of what to be aware of before you first strap on some skis and take to a beginner’s slope.

Tip #1 – Learn from a Professional

This might seem like obvious advice, but you would be surprised to learn how many beginners choose to avoid professional instruction, and instead learn from a friend or a family member. Skiing is not like riding a bicycle, or any other sport that can be easily learned, because the stakes are much higher. Professional instructors have the training and experience to teach you how to ski safely, and they also have the education background to scale their teaching to beginners of all levels. While a friend or family member might have their heart in the right place, they’re simply not qualified to be providing you with the critical beginner skiing steps.

Tip #2 – Avoid Powder When You’re Still Learning

While the soft powder snow might look like it’s the ideal surface to ski on, the truth is that it can be treacherous for beginners. It is easy to get bogged down and stuck, and if you’re still a beginner, you won’t have the experience or even patience to deal with this type of situation. When you learn with a professional, you will usually be sticking to groomed trails. Even when you have some confidence, stick to the harder surface until your skills are more developed. It’s much better to learn on consistent surfaces where you can nail the basics of skiing safely, without unnecessary difficulty.

Tip #3 – Get Fit Before You Start Skiing

Physical condition is often overlooked by beginners, but the truth is, you’re going to have a much easier time if you’re in relatively good physical condition. Leg and upper body strength will be essential, as will balance. Regular swimming, walking, cycling, or jogging, can all get you into shape before you hit the slopes. Remember that when you’re first learning, you could be on the snow for hours of the day. This could quickly sap your strength and energy if you’re not in decent shape.

Keep these tips in mind whenever you are learning to ski. With the right coaching and practice, you could develop a lifelong skill that will allow you to enjoy the snow and winter weather, and take advantage of skiing spots all over the world.
